Healthscreen, CA report success on DIAMOND diabetes management program

TORONTO -- "A breakthrough for patients!" is how Toronto-based Healthscreen Solutions describes the preliminary results of a pilot diabetes management and monitoring trial that is in process. The leading Canadian provider of physician practice enhancement services and electronic medical record software is undertaking a 12–week pilot program in collaboration with one of the world's leading independent IT management companies, CA Inc.

Some 500 diabetes patients have participated in Healthscreen's DIAMOND (Diabetes Management Optimized With Nurses and Devices) program. "We have seen striking behavioral changes in the patients since the pilot program began," said Justin Belobaba, President and CEO of Healthscreen Solutions. "Providing a number of patients with devices and online support that allows them to take a more active role in their own care, has proven to be beneficial for the patient and the medical community."

In the DIAMOND program, some of the 500 patients were provided with access to CA's Health and Wellness System software which collects biometric data from wireless monitoring devices, such as glucometers, blood pressure cuffs and weight scales. The 12–week program tracked drug use, provided reminders about blood pressure, fitness, and the delivery of drugs and nutrition. Data from their daily measurements is sent to a central database, where it is reviewed by nurses and physicians. Nurses monitor the data and provide feed-back to the patients, and in required cases, provide alerts to the physicians.

"We are setting the pace for world-best practices in preventative healthcare," said Mr. Belobaba. "By allowing patients to connect from their homes, we are giving them new freedom and empowerment. Real-time data delivery means that we are allowing for more precise tracking and trending of the impact of their daily behaviors such as diet and exercise, as well as adherence to prescription drugs. The medical experts are now reaching patients in a previously inaccessible environment; we have helped raise a curtain on a new venue for patient-physician dialogue."

"This program helps take pressure off the healthcare infrastructure, while providing additional opportunities for communication and feedback between patients and their healthcare providers," added Chris Stakutis, VP of Emerging Technology at CA. "Providing the healthcare community with the tools to help facilitate such communications and encourage active management of their patient's care is the path to follow. We chose Healthscreen for this pilot, because they have a unique and close relationship with their client base of more than 8,500 physicians.

"This is a new approach to patient-based care. The success of the program is encouraging to us and we are discussing expanding the program with Healthscreen, reaching out to more patients and their clinicians."
