Influential industry consortium to fuel Canada's Digital Adoption: Join with us to advance common cause

Emerging digital technologies such as mobile apps, digital platforms, and cloud architectures have the potential to create Canadian competitive advantage, boosting productivity and innovation – but only if those technologies are adopted by Canadian enterprises in the public and private sectors.

To fuel this adoption, a consortium of industry-leading representatives – the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), CATAAlliance and the CIO Association of Canada (CIOCAN) – has come together to give shape to an innovation agenda with implications for enterprises, educators and policy-makers.

The consortium will: Publish a “Digital Adoption Manifesto”, by mid-June 2014, highlighting the various catalysts for adopting technology as understood through consultation and research; and, setting up an Enable Learning Hub by mid November 2014 of several leading industry organizations that exemplify digital adoption.

The need is great. ICTC has calculated on the basis of new primary and secondary research that businesses that adopt mobile technologies enhance their productivity and establish sustainable competitive advantage. The challenge is particularly acute for small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Just a 1% increase in labour productivity as the result of adopting mobile technology would yield $2.5 billion in the Canadian economy – $8 billion if multiple emerging technologies were well-adopted. Yet, today, just half of Canadian enterprises have enabled mobile solutions across their entire workforce.

Canadian enterprises’ success in a global, connected environment will depend on advanced capabilities such as e-commerce, sophisticated inventory control and integration in sophisticated supply chains as trade agreements focus increasingly on the trade in services.

Addressing this opportunity will require measures that affect organizational culture, ongoing talent up-skilling, the engagement of the C-suite in digital conversations, access to financing and more.

There are encouraging signs in the landscape. A year ago ICTC, CATAAlliance and CIOCAN launched their Digital Adoption Campaign as co-champions. This month, the Government of Canada announced its Digital Canada 150 strategy that emphasized measures to help small- and medium-sized enterprises to adopt technology, and to ensure the availability of the talent necessary to take advantage of that. The consortium continues to  promote measures that will assist enterprises across the economy adopt technology and find talent, as outlined in ICTC’s recent submission to Industry Canada’s innovation consultation.
