Ottawa On...CATAAlliance ( a recognized champion of Canadian innovation and entrepreneurship congratulated the Trudeau government for dropping a controversial stock options tax plan as part of its innovation announcements in the 2016 federal budget. View video commentary:

CATAAlliance had called on the new Liberal Government in a cross Canada lobby campaign to reconsider increasing taxes on employee stock option benefits by limiting Canadian resident employees from claiming the stock option deduction in respect of option benefits in excess of $100,000 annually as part of helping to advance Canada's innovation and competitiveness ranking to number one from middle of the pack.

“I heard from many small business start-ups who use stock options as a legitimate tool to attract talent,” said federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau, when asked about the absence of any measures in the federal budget addressing stock options. “It’s not in our plans.”

CATA Innovation Leadership Council member, David Walsh, a BDO Canada Partner, who attended the federal Budget lockup said “the last thing the government wanted to do was introduce measures that would harm the sector and work against our shared mission of making Canada a competitive Innovation Nation.”
