About the Motorola Solutions Award for Public Safety Technology

This award is presented to a Canadian organization for an outstanding technology engineering development which has resulted in the production of a world-class Public Safety product or family of products.

Calgary Police Service in Profile

The Calgary Police Service has demonstrated both vision and leadership within the Canadian public safety community in all aspects of its operations, including its vision and leadership with Information Technology.

This vision and leadership runs throughout the organization and has its biggest champion in Chief Roger Chaffin a firm believer in and promoter of a culture of constant improvement and continuous community engagement.

Two areas that stand out are where CPS, have leveraged technology to investigate the hardening of mission critical data communications and to deliver Real Time Intelligence to officers in the field.

Over the last year CPS has dedicated resources to a proof of concept (POC) project where private Public Safety Broadband was implemented in parts of Calgary to understand better the viability and functionality of such a service when being used for day to day operations, surveillance and incident management.

Chief Chaffin’s team and CPS have been engaged in the groundbreaking use of technology for their Real Time Operations Centre (RTOC) to provide real-time support to front-line officers. The work in the RTOC assists CPS in quickly mobilizing teams of detectives and other resources that can “saturate a crime scene to effectively and efficiently process evidence, statements and suspect information towards the faster apprehension and charging of suspects”.

The result is that community safety, officer safety and timelines for the solving of crime are steadily being improved as the RTOC technology and staff work together with the officers in the field.
