Doina Oncel, the Founder of hEr VOLUTION sat down for a video interview with Kirstine Stewart, Chief Strategy Officer, Diply, formerly, Managing Director at Twitter Canada to discuss Women in #STEM.
hEr VOLUTION will be ending its #CanWomenSTEM150 campaign on July 15th with a one day in-person event where 15 women will be using Talks and Panel discussion as a tool to engage and inspire the delegates. The women speakers will be elite women profiled in the campaign, and who will represent diversity in their field as well as culturally. They will end their discussion with a recommendation to the audience, industry and young women alike, as to how to close the gender gap in STEM.
hEr VOLUTION mission & vision:
To advance education by providing workshops and instructional seminars on topics relating to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for low income and marginalized youth with a focus on girls and young women.
To advance education by providing camps during summer, winter and spring school breaks that provide STEM programs and activities in related fields.
To provide assistance, counselling and support to young women seeking employment in STEM-related fields who, because of their backgrounds, might not otherwise have access to such employment opportunities.
What is hEr VOLUTION –
Based in Toronto, Canada, hEr VOLUTION is the go to place for girls and young women from low-income households and underprivileged communities throughout Canada to come to in order to provide them with innovative workshops and support around 21st Century Skills. From here we work hand in hand with local government to create opportunities for the next generation of women in STEM to further connect them with leaders in the industry for career support. We do this by listening to the needs of the community and the industry while giving all the resources back to the general public in a language that everyone understands.
hEr VOLUTION was founded by Doina Oncel based on personal experience as well as research with the belief that once we accept diversity, opportunities for women in STEM fields will rise. Doina Oncel knows firsthand what it is like to be an immigrant woman, living in a low-income household, youth at risk, having to overcome domestic violence, homelessness, and now a single mother of two daughters. While surrounding herself with people who encouraged her to become a better self, she learned that she must be the change she wants to see in the world and while she creates opportunities for her daughters she wants to make the world a better place by encouraging parents to do the same for their daughters. Someone has believed in her to give her the opportunities she has today and now she wants to do the same for the next generation to follow.
hEr VOLUTION is here to inspire and revolutionize the STEM industry and change the world, by encouraging girls and young women to pursue STEM-based careers and promotes stakeholder’s involvement in the support of STEM education in Canada.
