CATAAlliance is launching a "Double the Pipeline" campaign in British Columbia. We will urge the B.C. government to fund a doubling of the enrolment in computer science and selected engineering programs in universities and colleges, to reduce members serious shortages of skilled people. Our 1998 "Double the Pipeline" campaign in Ontario prompted the government to establish the $223 million Access to Opportunities Program. Alberta doubled its high tech enrolment at the same time, and Quebec is moving in the same direction.
Strategic Microeletronics Fund - CATAAlliance is supporting the microelectronics industry's initiative seeking the creation of a research fund to support education in microelectronics. The Canada Research Chairs program announced in the Feb. 28 budget appears to address the needs of the industry.
Ontario is reviewing its Employment Standards Act. CATAAlliance supports an exemption for its high-tech workers from hours of work rules. CATAAlliance is submitting its recommendations that Ontario adopt similar legislation as enacted in British Columbia.
