58 Canadian Companies Get Partnership Opportunities With 3M
London, Ontario, May 31, 2006...CATAAlliance, Canada's largest high tech association, and 3M corporation, which invested $1.25 billion on Research and Development (R&D) last year, recently presented 3M's R&D teams with 88 proposals from Canadian organizations -- the result of a nationwide CATA search on 3M's behalf for research partners. 3M and CATA have now announced an ongoing business partnership, linking Canadian technology capability with 3M's interests in advancing its 'future focus' technologies. In the program, an ongoing monitoring service will provide Canadian companies with continuing opportunities to partner with 3M.
CATA President, John Reid, said, "We are honoured that in its quest for new products and technologies that one of the world's most innovative companies has turned to CATAAlliance to 'Google' Canada for research partners and commercial collaborators." Mr. Reid said CATA 'Googled' Canada's high-tech sector, tapping the association's 24,000 executives (registrants who op in to accept email from CATA) for ideas and proposals. CATA ranks in the top 10 of most read press releases by Canada Newswire with a web site that attracts thousands of hits daily. Projects are extensively covered by media channels that are integral to the CATA business network.
Mr. Reid added, "Our work with 3M, in partnership with the Consul & Trade Commissioner, Consulate General of Canada in Minneapolis, Minnesota (nominated for the 2006 Public Sector Leadership Award) aligns directly with CATA's mission to advance technology business growth through leveraging the forces of innovation and strategic alliance. This collaboration is a benchmark for industry-government partnership."
At the meeting held at 3M's Canadian offices in London, Ontario, CATA presented 3M Canada President, Ian Hardgrove, and 3M, VP of International Operations, Robert Brullo, with a compendium of 58 Canadian organizations (88 proposals in all) in the business, academic and government sectors that expressed an interest and demonstrated the ability to partner with 3M in various fields of technology endeavour.
Mr. Brullo said, "Submissions are being evaluated by our R and D teams in London, St. Paul and Austin, Texas and we intend to give each and every one careful consideration for follow up."
"3M has had a long and successful history of collaboration with individuals and companies outside of the company," added Hardgrove. "There is a diversity of technologies and potential customer solutions residing in universities, government laboratories and SME's and the success of our first project with CATA and the Canadian Consulate General has already broadened our contact with Canada's world class research capabilities and enhanced the likelihood of productive collaboration."
Hardgrove concluded, "Speed of innovation, from conception to marketplace, is critical in today's fast paced commercial world. We are still making the same kind of investment on research and development, but we fully recognize that there are other external opportunities to explore if we are to remain at the forefront. CATA will be a key partner for 3M in looking outside for leading edge ideas."
CATA has conducted similar partnership searches for Rockwell Collins, the U.S. Army, Northrop Grumman IT, AMI Semiconductor, and Hewlett - Packard (HP) and with the aid of the Consulate General offices and other international partners will be increasing the number of clients for its partnership program. CATA will also be announcing details of an extensive international market promotion campaign for its members in partnership with private and public sector organizations. Current work is in process with Pfizer and Intel Corporation.
