OTTAWA, March 8, 2006 - The CATA Women in Technology (WIT) Forum today announced that it is accepting nominations for the prestigious Sara Kirke Award, a national competition to honour Canada's leading women high-tech entrepreneurs. CATA is also pleased to announce that two CATA WIT Forum leaders have been nominated for awards for their work in promoting the cause of women in business and technology.
The Sara Kirke Award, sponsored this year by RBC Financial Group, is presented annually to those who demonstrate outstanding technological innovation and corporate leadership. It is named in honour of Sara Kirke - considered by many to be North America's first entrepreneur. Sara Kirke arrived in Newfoundland in 1638 and become one of the most successful merchants on the English Shore.
"The Sara Kirke Award is an important initiative of the CATA WIT Forum because it is a way to applaud leading women in technology and it provides an opportunity to highlight their accomplishments," said John Reid, President of CATA.
"At RBC, we understand the impact and influence of woman on the prosperity of Canada, and we are proud to recognize and support the incredible achievements of this country's leading woman technology entrepreneurs," said Kris Depencier, National Manager, Woman's Markets, RBC Royal Bank.
Two Ottawa CATA WIT Forum women are also being celebrated by their peers for leadership and entrepreneurial spirit in the Ottawa community.
Debi Rosati, Chair of the CATA WIT Forum National Advisory Council, is a finalist in the Women Business Network 2005 Businesswoman of the Year awards in the professional category to be announced on March 28th. Joanne Stanley, Vice President, CATA WIT Forum, has been nominated for a YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction award in the community entrepreneurial spirit category to be announced on May 17th.
The winner of this year's Sara Kirke Award will be announced at the CATA Innovation Awards gala dinner on June 20, 2006, at the Chateau Laurier Hotel.
