Sciemetric's Process Signature Verification (PSV) hardware/database system enables manufacturers to immediately detect variations/defects in a manufacturing process. PSV also enables targeted recalls based on the signatures of released products that prove to be defective as each product's serial number and manufacturing PSV is saved in a database. The characteristics of the defective product's signature can be used to find other products in the system with similar characteristics. Ford was able to reduce an automobile recall from 10,000 to 7 using the Sciemetric system. PSV can be used to improve any manufacturing process, reducing costs and increasing yield. They are miniature labs that can be swallowed like a pill, injected through a catheter, or woven into fabric. Their function is to screen for, detect, and potentially treat cancer and other diseases when they are still at a single-cell size in early development stages.

Research currently underway includes:

  • a miniature (pill-sized) device that will provide early detection of abnormal cells inside the body;
  • an imaging and communication system for non-invasive screening intarget organs systems such as the breast, pancreas and gastrointestinal tract and the relaying of information to an external receiver;
  • developing ingestible and insertable non-invasive imagers for routine screening of pancreatic and gastrointestinal tumors;
  • sensors that can detect food- and water-borne pathogens.

AirIQ uses the concept of wireless mobility to connect with machines so that owners can communicate remotely and automatically, without human intervention. AirIQ is expanding the same set of technologies that they use for tracking rental cars and truck fleets: a global positioning system (GPS), digital cellular networks, digitized mapping and the internet. The MyIQ tracking device will be a small buttonless piece of electronics about the size of a mobile phone that can be concealed in a child's backpack or sewn into their jacket. The device uses a two-way GSM radio controller to report data to the AirIQ network, a long lasting battery, GPS antenna so that satellites can lock onto their position, a motion sensor to monitor when the device moves and stops. Parents can choose to receive automatic notifications either by phone or through email, and see the device's location on a map using the web. The device is not just for children it can be placed on nearly anyone or anything.

Rod Bryden is the President and CEO of Plasco Energy Group which has developed a proprietory energy recovery solution, Plasco Conversion System, that converts carbonaceous materials such as municipal solid waste into an energy rich fuel or 'syngas' and a commercially useful solid called 'slag'. Dr. Sylvain Charbonneau

Sylvain Charbonneau received the Ph.D. degree in physics from Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, Canada in 1988. From l988 to l998, he was a Member of Scientific Staff in the Institute for Microstructural Sciences of the National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa, ON. During this time, he was involved in a number of activities and led such programs as nano-electronics, nano-optics and wavelength routing and switching. He has published over 200 papers and has sixteen patents granted or pending in the field of optoelectronics. From 1998 to January 2000, Dr. Charbonneau took on the responsibility of Director of Components Technologies for the Institute for Microstructural Sciences. His responsibilities included components related research and development programs for the Institute as well as the initial development phase of the newly funded Canadian Photonic Fabrication Center (CPFC). Following a brief assignment of 14 months as Chief Technology Officer of a NRC start up company, he returned to the Institute for Microstructural Sciences as the lead Director responsible for the management and operation of the CPFC. He is an Adjunct Professor at five Canadian universities.

Jacques Duchesneau is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), created in April 2002 in the wake of 9/11. He is an innovative and respected senior executive with more than 20 years of experience in a variety of highly successful key leadership, management and advisory positions. He has strong roots in the world of policing, security and business at the national and international levels. For close to 30 years he had a distinguished career with the Montreal Urban Community Police Service (MUCPS), culminating in his appointment as Chief of Police and Chief of Staff (1994-1998). In this frontline position, he was leader of the 2 nd largest municipal police force in Canada and the 7 th largest in North America. From 1994-1998, he also held the position of Treasurer of the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime. He was also VicePresident of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police(1993-1997) and President of the Quebec Association of Police Directors (1993-1997).

Mr. Duchesneau has developed a reputation, both in Canada and around the world, as one of the foremost experts in the field of security. In 1999, he was the Government of Canada's Official Candidate for the position of Secretary General of Interpol and was named to the short list of three finalists.
