Toronto, ON –  Canada’s much anticipated refreshed cyber security strategy was released today by Public Safety Canada, DND, RCMP and ISED during a press conference held in Ottawa. Key priorities are focused on not only securing government entities but also providing Canadian businesses, in particular, small to medium enterprises with the resources and support needed to ensure long-term security and prosperity.

Key highlights from the announcement included the following:

  • Announcement of Mr. Scott Jones as new Director of Canadian Cyber Security Centre (CSC) within CSE. New centre will bring together all federal government cyber security expertise
  • $155M operational budget for CSC over 5 years
  • Investment of $28M over 5 years for a voluntary certification program to help Canadian SME’s gain the security posture needed to compete in the growing and global online marketplace
  • $200M to RCMP over 5 years to help address the growing issue of cybercrime which costs the Canadian economy $3B each year. This money will help support the deployment of the National Cyber Crimes Unit.
  • Through the development of cyber security skills and expertise, Canada will not only position itself as a global leader for cyber security but will drive innovation, skills development and job creation
  • Bolster and encourage public and private sector collaboration

“The announcement is definitely a step in the right direction. It now becomes imperative that the government not only execute on these priorities but demonstrate a strong willingness to work with industry and academia – on a sustained basis – moving forward” says Imran Ahmad, Partner with Miller Thomson and CATA Cyber Advisory Board member.

“The government has done a great job through the consultations of capturing a lot of what we are hearing from those within the Canadian marketplace when it comes to what is needed” says Katherine Thompson, Chair of CATA’s Cyber Council and Principal with HFS Inc. “Our 2017 mandate highlights the priorities set forward in this strategy and we are looking forward to working with government to drive sustainable growth and security for all Canadians” adds Thompson.
