About the Telfer School of Management Private Sector Innovation Award

This award presented annually at the CATA Innovation Gala is given to an individual from the private sector who has significantly expanded the frontiers of Canada’s advanced technology industry.  The recipient must have demonstrated consistent innovation and leadership skills.

As President &  CEO of Martello Technologies, Bruce Linton is an entrepreneur, community and business leader.

Martello has experienced considerable growth with a 298% five year revenue increase placing the company number 31 on the Startup Profit 2016 list.  

With this growth mode,  CEO Bruce Linton felt that it was important for employees to find a way to give back to the wider community and the premise for what became Martello’s Employee-Directed Gift program: a) recognize the organizations and charities that were most important to our employees, and b) increase our employees’ engagement and involvement in the community through volunteerism.

By supporting these charities or organizations, the ‘ripple’ may start small but as we continue with this program, the ripples increase in size and sweep out into the community affecting real change.

A ‘Martellian’ says what the program means to them:

“To me, the gift program is the sign of a maturing company that sees its role in the larger community context. Yes profit/loss is important to survival as a company but giving back also shows that we are about more than just the bottom line. As an employee, I like the fact that we are healthy as a company but also not greedy and willing to give back”.

While at many companies such discussions are theoretical, Mr. Linton says, “Ours are real. That’s what gives the energy to everybody.” It’s easier to create a positive work environment, he adds, if employees are doing “real work for real end users.”
